I had my goals printed and taped inside a kitchen cabinet door—where I thought I would see them every day.

I had not opened that cabinet in eleven days.

The list said “run 3x week,” “grow email list 20%,” “family game night Fridays,” and “meal prep Sundays.” By the second week of January I was answering shop emails until midnight, skipping runs, and serving cereal for dinner on what was supposed to be game night. I felt like the goals were judging me from behind the peanut butter.

That was not a willpower problem. It was a planning problem. I had written ambitions, not a heart-centered plan that fit the shop, school drop-off, and the fact that some weeks I am running on four hours of sleep.

If your goals keep sliding off when life gets loud, these are the shifts that actually stuck for me—not a perfect system, but one I still use.

Start on paper: Get the free goal-setting worksheets here if you want the same layout I fill out before I touch a planner.

1. Write what you are not doing this season

Before you add goals, write a “not now” list. Last year mine included reorganizing the entire garage, learning a second language, and posting on TikTok daily.

Saying no on paper freed up mental space. I stopped treating every idea like a failure because it was not on the active list.

2. Pick one anchor habit—not ten resolutions

You can want change in five areas. You will probably only build one new habit at a time without burning out.

Choose one anchor: a walk after lunch, ten minutes of journaling, shutting the laptop at 6 p.m. Let other goals hang off that rhythm instead of starting five unrelated streaks on January 1.

3. Break goals into something you can do this week

“Grow the business” is not a goal my Thursday self understands. “Email three wholesale contacts” is.

Take each heart-centered goal and ask: what would I do in the next seven days if I meant it? Put that on the calendar like you would a dentist appointment.

4. Keep goals where life actually happens

The inside of a cabinet door failed me. What works: the Inspired Year Planner open on my desk during the weekly reset, and one goal line at the top of each week spread so I see it when I plan meals and shop orders.

If your planner lives in a drawer, your goals will too.

5. Use one daily line for focus

Big yearly goals need a daily bridge. I write one priority on the Daily Focus Notepad each morning—sometimes shop-related, sometimes “be at pickup on time,” sometimes rest.

One line is enough on the days when everything else is noise.

6. Do a 15-minute weekly reset

Same day, same rough time. Mine is Sunday after breakfast. I look at the week ahead, move one thing off the list if the schedule is already full, and check whether my anchor habit happened more than it did not.

Fifteen minutes beats a quarterly guilt spiral every time.

7. Plan for the week that falls apart

Kids get sick. Launch week eats you alive. You will miss runs and meal prep and game night sometimes.

Decide in advance what “minimum version” looks like: a ten-minute walk instead of three miles, one takeout night without shame, goals visible but paused—not deleted and rewritten in a panic.

Heart-centered goal setting includes room for a bad week without calling the whole year a write-off.

8. Tell one person the truth about what you want

I told my husband I wanted Fridays protected for admin instead of pretending I would “find time.” He took pickup that day. One conversation removed a recurring fight.

You do not need a announcement post. Tell one person who shares your kitchen or your calendar.

I still tape things inside cabinets sometimes. Now I also keep the year plan where I open it every Sunday, and I use the worksheets when the list in my head gets longer than my arm.

Bookmark this if you are in a season where every planner feels like another thing to fail at. Come back when you need a reset.

When you are ready to write goals that match your real schedule—not the fantasy version—download the free goal-setting worksheets.
