First Day of School
Motherhood is a slow process of letting go.
At first, they seem to need too much – constant swaddling, changing, feeding and comfort.
We just want a break.
Then, they slowly learn to – Put on their own clothes. Bathe themselves. Make their own breakfast. Read to themselves. Find their way around a new place.
And then, one day, they don’t want to get their picture taken while at school on their first day. In fact, they want to walk to the classes themselves.
And I, lovingly, give them their freedom. I understand the excitement that comes from being able to do things on your own.
And I can cherish that they are still mine. I always have their heart.
And I know they still need me. I know their heart is calmest when in my arms. And when there’s something unknown up ahead, they look to me to tell them it’s ok.
And, I know, that my proudest moments, are in seeing them try something new, and succeed.
Happy First Day of School, to my 1st, 3rd, and 6th grader. I love seeing you grow into your best selves.
