How to create goals with balance in mind

“Date night can be a goal? I thought goal-setting was supposed to be for the really hard stuff?”

Well, if you’re like many women I know (including me), making time for our spouses or loved ones amidst our busy lives is often not a high enough priority. So, really, it can be hard.

But quality time with the people we love most is often what makes us happiest!

Shouldn’t your goals make you happy?!

So many times, when we talk about goal-setting, we think about productivity-focused goals such as business-building or health-related goals. We believe these are most “important” and most worthy of our attention.

We often consider less productivity-oriented acts – such as slowing down to make cookies with the kids, getting a massage, or scheduling a regular date night – as unnecessary in goal-setting.

However, it’s particularly these nurture-oriented goals, like date nights, that are paramount to our happiness.

Our happiness is the foundation of our success.

If we aren’t happy, or aren’t feeling fulfilled, we surely aren’t going to be as successful in achieving any of our goals. And having goals that only make us unhappy, in fact, often leads us to abandon them.

I want you to have goals you enjoy pursuing! Here’s how…

“One thing I love about the planner is that it doesn’t just focus on business goals, it helps you look at the full circle of your life.”

— Blogging coach, Daniela Uslan, on the Inspired Year Planner and work+life balance.

Do you ever feel resentful towards your goals? When we set goals without looking at out whole self, we can create unrealistic expectations – which can lead to resent or abandonment – because we are not acknowledging and nurturing ourselves in our relationships, need for downtime or self-care.Goal-setting with balance allows us to focus on areas of our life where we truly feel we’ve been under-serving.Our goals are attainable and enjoyable to pursue when our heart is behind them.
How the Inspired Year Planner helps you set goals with balance With the Inspired Year Planner, you’ll get over 10 pages at the beginning of the year to reflect upon your goals… Not just what they are, but how you want to feel when the goal is attained.Focusing on how you want to feel helps you truly consider the purpose of the goal and how it fits into your life. The balance chart grounds you to focus on where you are most/least fulfilled:

  • Have you been neglecting relationships?
  • Do you feel like you’ve had enough quality time with your kids?
  • Have you adequately nurtured your spiritual needs?
  • Are you happy with your exercise routine?

Highlighting which areas are being neglected most, allows you to best determine where to focus your goals.

For example:

If you see that you are most out of balance with relationships…

Perhaps you make a goal to go on more date nights or clear your schedule for one afternoon a week to have quality time with your kids.

If you aren’t giving yourself enough self-care, or simply enjoying the present…

Perhaps you pursue a long-lost hobby – sign up for roller-skating or zumba classes, or schedule a monthly massage.

And if you want to give yourself more time and space for your creative projects…

Perhaps you schedule the time, one evening per week, to skip the dinner routine and work on a specific task that helps you move a creative project forward.

The Inspired Year Planner helps you set GOALS that reflect what you need to feel balanced & whole.

For me, using the balance chart has helped guide me to pursue goals that truly make me feel like I’m nurturing myself: to take up painting, to build my business in new ways that reflect things I care about, and to make more space for quality family time.

And sure enough… most recently, it’s helped me commit to a monthly date night (2 months in a row completed, check!)
