What message aren’t you sharing with the world?
“Everything I’ve done has made me who I am, and I want to share what I’ve learned.”
Do people repeatedly come to you asking for help with certain things? What do people say you’re really good at? What do your friends and colleagues ask you for advice on? What are you so passionate about it makes you angry?
Chances are, if you are constantly inspired by and inspiring others, your knowledge is in demand. You have a message that resonates with others on a similar journey.
Tell your story, and share it with the world.
I’m lucky enough to have new inspiration from my recent attendance at Pioneer Nation, a conference by Chris Guillebeau, which I believe may change my entire outlook on what’s possible (I highly recommend you follow Chris and attend any of his events). And here’s what I learned: If you have passion, expertise (and remember we are all constant learners so take this qualification lightly), and a demand for you to share this expertise, you can profit from “teaching what you know” and sharing that knowledge with a larger audience.
Write a blog
I encourage you to start a blog, start experimenting with your message in writing, and begin your journey of sharing that message with a larger audience.
Although I am a web designer and have been blogging since 2004, truthfully, I don’t know much about blogging. I didn’t start sharing my blog publicly until last year. So, I am learning — you are here witnessing my journey firsthand! But I do know some resources to point you to.
Start by getting your website with a hosting account – I recommend InMotion Hosting. Many people have found Blogelina to be very useful resource for how to start a blog. If you aren’t sure how to get over the technical side of it, you can bypass a lot of tech and design considerations altogether with Squarespace. You can then share on Bloglovin to get started right away. You can also attend one of my upcoming workshops which will walk you through the entire process and have you launching your new blog before you go home. I also recommend listening to the Fizzle Podcast “Finding Your Voice.”
Write a book
Once you’ve found your voice through writing regularly for your blog, and recognized the value in what you can share, you may also consider writing a book to reach an even larger audience and turn your efforts into income as well.
If you need to be convinced that its possible for you to write, publish & make money off a book, read Authority by Nathan Barry. Nathan has made over $150,000 selling books that he self-published, and his honest, straightforward account of how he did it is inspiring and empowering. After reading this book, I realized that my dream of writing a book is attainable, and I am putting into action many of his recommendations to start on this right away. You can too.
If you are a mom, and want a great example of how to structure an actionable, practical guide, I recommend Raising Happiness by Christine Carter Not only is it a great example of a book structure, but it’s a wealth of amazing parenting advice that I believe every parent can benefit from.
Take action
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” – Maya Angelou
Remember that any action is better than no action. Don’t spin your wheels, don’t spend too much time formulating the perfect approach. Get it out there, make your mistakes and learn from them, and continue refining and sharing your message.
If you’re already well on your way to sharing your message via blog, book or other, what has worked well for you? I encourage you to share in the comments below. We are all stronger and more empowered by sharing our wealth of knowledge with the world.
