Celebrating the World Cup in Costa Rica
Just prior to our trip, soccer took over our house on the weekends, and we realized a possible issue with our travel schedule to Costa Rica. We were literally flying into the country right in the middle of the final game of the World Cup. Tim threatened to change his flight if the U.S. was in the World Cup finals, so when it ended up being Germany and Argentina, we were at least clear of having to change our flights… but were hopeful that with our flight landing only 60 minutes into the game that we’d be able to catch the second half when we landed.
Of course, we weren’t fooling ourselves. We knew that deplaning, customs, baggage pickup, and getting our rental car would take significant time as well. As luck would have it, the game went into overtime which gave us more time to watch it. And, even luckier was that there was a German-owned bar that was showing the game just a km from where we picked up our rental car. We made it out in time to watch the end of the game, join a good crowd of enthusiasts, and celebrate Germany’s win. The owner of the restaurant began handing out shots and cigars after Germany won the game 1-0 during overtime. It was quite an experience!
